Rehabilitation of Brooklyn Plaza at the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel

Brooklyn Plaza

As a subconsultant, SI Engineering, P.C. (SIE) provided lighting and electrical design services for The Hugh L. Carey (Brooklyn-Battery) Tunnel. The tunnel is 9,117 feet long, with twin tubes comprised of four traffic lanes that connect Brooklyn and Manhattan. The task at the Brooklyn Plaza involved the installation of new conduits after the removal of existing conduit. The assignment also involved the addition of conduits to power two booths at the truck check point, with the capacity to power lights, sockets, and heating units. The conduit design work involved replacement of the existing single conduit with two 2” conduits. The assignment also included the removal of an existing guard hut and adjacent light pole. The electrical design work involved the evaluation of the existing condition and performing load calculations utilizing the existing light poles. The field survey was performed and existing conditions were evaluated. After carrying out the voltage drop and load calculations, lighting and electrical plans were prepared as per TBTA standards and criteria.
