The goal of this project was to provide flood resiliency and equipment hardening for the nine (9) pump rooms that connect between Manhattan and the Bronx in four (4) general locations. As a subconsultant, SI Engineering, P.C. (SIE) provided construction management and quality compliance services. The pump rooms involved in this contract were:
- PR-2073 on Track 1 of the 8th Avenue IND Line (A/C/E train)
- PR-2074 on Track 1 of the 8th Avenue IND Line (A/C/E train)
- PR-3175 on Track 1 of the Broadway 7th Avenue IRT Line (1 train)
- PR-3177 on Track 4 of the Broadway 7th Avenue IRT Line (1/2/3 train)
- PR-3178 on Track 1 of the Broadway 7th Avenue IRT Line (1/2/3 train)
- PR-3207 on Track 4 of the Broadway 7th Avenue IRT Line (4/5/6 train)
- PR-3208 on Track 4 of the Broadway 7th Avenue IRT Line (4/5/6 train)
- PR-2133 adjacent to Track 2 and Track 3-4 of Concourse IND Line (B/D train) (mid-river) on Track 1 on the Harlem River Tube
- PR-2134 adjacent to Track 2 and Track 3-4 of Concourse IND Line (B/D train) on Track 2 on the Harlem River Tube
Mechanical work on this project included the removal of existing emergency pumps in all pump rooms and pneumatic pumps in PR-3175 and PR-3177. The pneumatic pumps were replaced with new emergency floor-mounted pumps, and new emergency pumps were provided in all pump rooms. Additional mechanical work included replacing existing pump car 4” ball valves with new 4” gate valves; providing mew 4” camlock pump car hose connectors, including 4” flanges and extension pipes in all pump rooms; providing discharge pipes along the tracks for PR-2133 and PR-2134; clearing track drain inlet pipes; replacing baffles plates entering the sumps; and providing check valves in existing pressure relief manholes.
Electrical scope items include providing pole mounted generator connection boxes (GCBs) at street level and generator feed cables from the street-level GCBs to the emergency pump(s) at each pump station. Additional work includes installing new electrical feeders and conduits from street level GCBs through shafts to the local Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) and local motor control centers (MCCs) in the pump rooms sized for the emergency pump(s) at each pump station. Local MCCs are to be replaced with new pump controls MCCs to allow for emergency power to the emergency pump(s) at each pump station with IP68 disconnect enclosures in pump rooms. Tasks also include installing new ATS and distribution panels for GCB connections, providing power supply for new Instrumentation and Control and communications equipment, installing new electrical panels, new conduits along the bench walls for each pump room location, and demolishing various equipment to be replaced, as well as providing all temporary electrical power needed for construction work.
