As a subconsultant, SI Engineering, P.C. (SIE) provided construction inspection services for this project, which aimed to provide structural protection for steel surfaces and minimize deterioration of bridges throughout Region 11, as well as maintain continuity of highways and restore the overall aesthetics of the bridges.
The bridges were located on the following corridors: Major Deegan Expressway (I-87), Throgs Neck Expressway (I-695), Bruckner Expressway / Cross Bronx Expressway (I-95), Bruckner Expressway (I-278), Mosholu Parkway (908F), Bronx River Parkway (907H), West Shore Expressway (NY 440), Long Island Expressway (I-495), Van Wyck Expressway (I-678), Grand Central Parkway (907M), Clearview Expressway (I-295), Nassau Expressway (NY 898), Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (I-278), and Gowanus Expressway (I-278).
The scope consisted of painting steel surfaces and sealing concrete supports to protect against corrosion, acid rain, and deicing agents. The work included pressure washing and abrasive blast cleaning to remove all paint, rust, rust scale, mill scale, corrosion producing contaminants, debris, dirt, and other foreign matter on the bridge superstructures, as well as total painting of structural steel surfaces. Limited steel repair work was required to address structural steel elements exhibiting section loss or significant corrosion. SIE inspectors were responsible for performing detailed inspections and on-site testing of materials.
