As a subconsultant, SI Engineering, P.C., (SIE) provided construction inspection services at various locations in Nassau and Suffolk counties. The objective of this project was to provide safety improvements at intersections by extending left turn lanes, extending acceleration and deceleration lanes at various arterials and parkways, and to address low friction concrete pavement readings at locations identified by the SKARP list and Safety Evaluation Section Study. The extension of left turn lanes would decrease rear end and overtaking incidents, provide additional left turn storage and improve traffic flow. Diamond grinding of concrete pavement improved friction characteristics. The project also included work such as installation or relocation of drainage structures and removal / replacement of guide rail or median barrier as deemed necessary due to the extension of lanes.
