The Cross County Parkway lighting infrastructure was partially non-operational, due to the age and damages from vehicle strikes. Damaged underground conduit and wiring resulted in strings or groups of lights that all went dark simultaneously. While the luminaire pole and bulbs may have been in good repair, in some cases, electric service could not be supplied to an affected area near a cable break, thus rendering the lights non-functional.
As a subconsultant, SI Engineering, P.C. (SIE) was responsible for addressing the lighting / electrical design services for this project. This project repaired or replaced lighting along the Cross County Parkway. Work included repairing or replacing electrical supply lines, light pole or mast arm davits, and concrete bases along the Cross County Parkway in the Town of Eastchester, City of Mount Vernon, and City of Yonkers, Westchester County. The project restored overhead lighting to be fully operational along the Cross County Parkway.
Work involved reviewing existing documents and an initial field visit, as well as developing base mapping from the existing documents and files. SIE staff conducted detailed field inspection to document all poles, luminaires, junction boxes, service cabinets, and electrical branch circuits (wiring) as to determine the working condition for the purpose of identifying recommendations for repair or replacement.
After detailed inspections were complete, SIE staff generated a report with findings and recommendations and created the design for the new lighting / electrical system. The lighting design included fixtures layout, power source and electrical equipment placements, conduit layout, lighting calculations using visual lighting software, voltage drop calculations, preparation of lighting / electrical plans, detail drawings, specifications, cost estimation and preparation of lighting / electrical final report. The lighting design was performed as per NYSDOT standards and criteria and as per the project specific information provided by the client.
