As a subconsultant, SI Engineering, P.C. (SIE) provided design-build services for the MNR Penn Station Access Project. This project provides Metro-North Railroad customers with service into and out of Penn Station via Amtrak’s Hell Gate Line. The project is a key element and strategic component of a comprehensive plan to transform and expand New York’s vital regional transportation infrastructure and to enhance the economy, environment, and future of the northeast section of the Bronx. Metro-North operates three main lines east of the Hudson River – the Hudson Line, the Harlem Line, and the New Haven Line. While each of these lines currently provides Metro-North customers service to Grand Central Terminal (“GCT”) on Manhattan’s East Side, none currently provide service to Penn Station on Manhattan’s West Side
SIE was responsible for the inspection and reporting of four (4) bridges: Bronx River Bridge, Bronxdale Avenue Bridge, Eastchester Road Bridge, and Pelham Lane Bridge. Bronx River Bridge required a full in-depth inspection of all superstructure elements including all truss, girder, floorbeam, and stringer elements and all structural lift components, along with verification of all findings from the previous report. Access was obtained by waders, boat, ladders, structural climbing, and walking.
The other three bridges required in-depth inspection of all substructure elements, including verification of superstructure findings from the previous inspection reports and identification of any changes. Access was obtained by ladders and walking. All reports included a summary, detailed measurements, and photographs for the design team to be able to design repair details for each deficiency.
