John F. Kennedy International Airport Terminal 6 Redevelopment

As a subconsultant, SI Engineering, P.C. (SIE) provided structural design and engineering services for the redevelopment of Terminal 6 at JFK Airport. This $2 billion project involved the redevelopment of Terminal 6 at JFK Airport, including the new terminal, supporting roadways, utilities, and aircraft apron. The new terminal will be 1.15 million square feet and include nine widebody aircraft gates, a new ground transportation center, and redeveloped roadway.

SIE staff served as a part of the Design team, working directly with Engineering and BIM staff to develop most of the key design elements. Tasks included performing structural design calculations as part of the overall design effort. Specific work items include the demolition of the existing terminal and design of the new terminal, as well as design of a new piling system for the building, new connector bridges to existing terminals, and refurbishment / addition to existing connector bridge to the AirTrain. A unique piling design was utilized in which the entire ground slab was suspended and the piles were supports to the ground slab. Other unique and challenging design elements were “Oculus Skylights” which span 60’ and a cable suspended canopy that appears to cantilever around 30’ from the face of the building.
