As the Prime consultant, SI Engineering, P.C. (SIE) provided preliminary and final design services for this Vision Zero capital project, which aimed to design and construct pedestrian safety improvements at three (3) intersections in the southern Bronx. The work extended curbs and sidewalks at a total of six (6) corners, comprising of two (2) bus bulbs under elevated train tracks and four (4) standard curb extensions. The design also included installation of three (3) pedestrian islands, upgrade of ADA pedestrian ramps, and removal of slip lanes. The project complemented these safety treatments with a suite of streetscape improvements, including new street furniture, street trees, lighting, and wayfinding signage.
For the Preliminary Design phase, SIE performed a topographic survey within the project limits, inspecting pedestrian ramps, performing a traffic study, taking inventory of trees and hardware, and developing roadway pavement design, schematic geometric design, and schematic landscape / urban design. The Preliminary Design phase also included preliminary quantity and cost estimating. The Final Design phase included street design, tree impact mitigation and planting program, design of street lighting and traffic signal systems, construction staging and MPT, and final landscape / urban design. SIE was responsible for preparing final quantity and cost estimations, as well as preparation of specifications and review and analysis of bids.
The work required special coordination with MTA-NYCT for the work beneath elevated tracks, close to columns, and at bus stops. Coordination with PDC was also required for CityEl approval.
