This multidisciplinary project involved civil, structural, painting, mechanical, electrical, communications, and security systems for the installation of a main cable dehumidification system on the four cables of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge (VNB). This system is essential to fight corrosion of the cables, preserve their strength, and extend their service lifespans. As a subconsultant, SI Engineering, P.C. (SIE) provided construction compliance oversight services.
In addition to the installation of the dehumidification system on each cable, the project also involved installation of an associated electrical and communication system, an acoustic monitoring system, and temporary access work platforms, as well as removal of the platforms. The project also included maintenance and monitoring of the newly installed systems for five (5) years after commissioning, as well as internal cable inspection of between twelve (12) and sixteen (16) main cable panel points. Additional tasks included replacement of all cable band bolts, aerial obstruction lights, messenger cables, and hand ropes and stanchions, as well as painting all cable bends, suspender ropes above the temporary platform, hand ropes, and stanchions.
As a subconsultant, SIE provided construction compliance oversight services. Our inspectors were responsible for overseeing construction work to ensure that it was performed in accordance with the requirements of the Design-Build contract. This also included the provision of written status reports on actual versus scheduled progress.
