This rehabilitation project was required to extend the useful life of the VNB lower-level deck and ensure it remains in a state of good repair for an additional 20 years until such time that a full deck replacement can be completed. Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) sensors were implemented into the Final Design Package. The WIM sensors were placed in four (4) EB lanes feeding the Upper Level (UL) roadways, to the west of the existing EB tolling gantries and two (2) EB lanes feeding the Lower Level (LL) roadways, to the east of the existing EB tolling gantries. One additional set of sensors was placed in the slip ramp from the WB Upper Level to WB Lower Level, west of the existing WB tolling gantries. The sensor types used are ASTM E1318 Type III double quartz piezometers. The new WIM system is compatible with the future integration of the integrated Camera / LPR system elements.
As a subconsultant, SI Engineering, P.C. (SIE) provided construction support services for electrical scope items, including the WIM sensors. Tasks included responding to RFIs, review and resubmittal of shop drawings, field visits, attendance at meetings, evaluating construction engineering proposals, and providing CADD services to incorporate redline markups to produce as-built drawings.
