33rd Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues, is a partial viaduct that needed to be replaced and regraded in order to accommodate the new buildings in the development of Hudson Yards. The adjacent block of West 33rd Street, between 10th and 11th Avenue, is currently being rebuilt. This project involved the block of West 33rd Street between 11th and 12th Avenue, which is a viaduct for the east portions near 11th Avenue. This project included the replacement of the entire street, sewers, and water mains; extension of retaining walls towards 11th Avenue; and replacement of parts of the viaduct superstructure. The project limits were the entirety of 33rd Street from 12th Avenue west to 11th Avenue, including any support structures.
As a subconsultant, SI Engineering, P.C. (SIE) provided viaduct bridge inspection, traffic signal system design, and street lighting system design for this project. SIE was responsible for conducting a bridge inspection of the viaduct portion of 33rd Street and preparing a bridge inspection report of the project site using guidelines set by the NYSDOT Bridge Inspection Manual (2016).
SIE also provided traffic signal system design. Work involved the modernization of existing traffic signal systems and the installation of new traffic signal systems, including the design or redesign of all other appurtenances.
Lastly, SIE also provided street lighting system design for this project. This design work included the rehabilitation and replacement or relocation of the existing street lighting systems, including the design of all other appurtenances. The scope of work for the street lighting system design included preparation of a lighting system design in cooperation and accordance with DOT’s Division of Street Lighting.
