This project aimed to alleviate unsafe conditions around public schools, including dangerous turns, irregular intersections, long crossings, and poor visibility. This was done by constructing islands and sidewalk extensions at these dangerous locations to shorten crossing distances and increase visibility between pedestrians and drivers. These solutions also help calm traffic by physically and visually narrowing the roadway and forcing turning vehicles to slow down. The project also involved upgrading watermains and installing new catch basins.
As a subconsultant, SI Engineering, P.C. (SIE) was responsible for inspecting construction activities for compliance with project plans and specifications. Work was performed at four primary locations near PS 307. At the crossing of West Kingsbridge Road and Sedgewick Avenue, the work involved sidewalk extension and reconstruction at the northeast and southwest corners. Along West Kingsbridge Road from Webb Avenue to University Avenue, work involved sidewalk extensions, sidewalk reconstruction, and construction of a bus pad. Along West Kingsbridge Road from Reservoir Avenue to Davidson Avenue, the proposed work involved sidewalk extensions, sidewalk reduction in locations where the road becomes very narrow, sidewalk reconstruction, construction of a bus pad, and a greenstreet area. Sidewalk extension and reconstruction also took place along Eames Place from Webb Avenue to University Avenue.
Our staff kept track of work in place totals for all items of work, including contract, extra, and time and material work on a daily basis. We also performed field testing for concrete, steel, and earthwork operations and tracked, sampled, and logged material deliveries to confirm that all materials were in compliance with plans and specifications. SIE was responsible for delivering daily work reports, as-built sketches, daily time and material records, and other documents. We also provided community liaison services.
