As a subconsultant, SI Engineering, P.C. (SIE) provided Biennial and Special Inspections at the Robert F Kennedy Bridge – Mainline. This project involved a 100% hands-on inspection of 142 spans, consisting of framing systems such as multi-girder, girder / floorbeam / stringers, through truss, suspension spans with orthotropic deck, and anchorages using various aerial lifts with or without lane closures. The inspection followed the latest NYSDOT BIM, which required documentation and photographs of conditions which were given a condition rating of CS-3 through CS-5, including any increase in ratings from the previous inspection. The field note documentation included sketches, updating of the TBTA database as per AASHTO element level, and NYSDOT and TBTA requirements. Including the biennial inspection, SIE also performed red and yellow zone concrete sounding of the Queens approach, Queens viaduct, both anchorages, Randall’s Island viaduct and Bronx Kills truss and noted any changes in previous conditions. SIE also assisted with the NYSDOT Biennial Report, BDIS update, and TBTA narrative reports with miscellaneous report including the paint, wearing surface, and red and yellow zone reports. As part of the Special Inspection, SIE provided a 100% hands-on inspection of over 1,000 structural components of the bridge. In addition to the Element Inspection, SIE also performed Red and Yellow Zone concrete sounding of the Queens approach, Queens viaduct, both anchorages, and the Randall’s Island viaduct and noted any changes in conditions. SIE also performed Rocker Bearing measurements during cold weather to review if they were in a proper position (contracted) and if they were functional (further contracted from the summer readings).
