CM Services for the Replacement of Two (2) Escalators, Stairs, and Elevator at 42nd Street – Grand Central Station, Lexington Avenue Line

As a subconsultant, SI Engineering, P.C. (SIE) provided consultant construction management services. This project involved the replacement of two (2) escalators, two (2) sets of stairs, and one (1) elevator at 42nd Street – Grand Central station on the Lexington Avenue line. The goal of this project was to alleviate deficiencies and improve operations, circulation, and customer safety at Grand Central Station. All contractual work was performed at Grand Central Terminal, an extremely high-traffic intermodal transit station.

The scope of the project included the reinforcement of existing escalator support beams, as well as the addition of new support beams at mezzanine, street, and intermediate levels; reconstruction of concrete slabs affected by the removal of beams at the mezzanine and street level; replacement of the hatch at the escalator pit to accommodate a new ship ladder; and provision of a steel frame for the escalator. Elevator work included the provision of steel connection brackets to new elevator guide rails, as well as a new elevator hoist beam and connections. Work on the stairs included reconstruction of the concrete stairs; reinforcement and/or replacement of existing stair support beams; reconstruction of concrete slabs affected by the removal of beams at the mezzanine, street, and intermediate levels; and providing concrete footing for new concrete stairs, as well as installing ADA-compliant handrails. Also included in the scope was the construction of a new combined machine room for the escalators and elevator. The work also addressed the historic preservation of the Grand Central passageway and integration of artwork.
