As a subconsultant, SI Engineering, P.C. (SIE) provided consultant field inspection services. The project aimed to provide the Livonia Maintenance Shop with adequate service needed to maintain and prolong the useful life of the car fleet, as well as to upgrade, replace, and / or repair the components to meet acceptable working conditions and be functional for 20 more years.
Major items of structural work on this project included replacement of exterior steel columns including vertical diagonal bracings; repair of existing steel columns on the west and east sides of the shop, existing spalled / cracked concrete for the exposed areas of retaining wall on the west side, including concrete curb with grating, and the cracked concrete exposed on wall footing on the eastern side street level; providing oil water separator steel platform and structural supports for door lintels; and replacement of roof tiles as required.
Major civil and utility work items included removal and replacement of roof drains with all associated drain pipe, providing additional new roof drains in the shop roof with all associated drain pipe, removal and replacement of existing track drain pipe, re-routing the existing 4 track pit drainage system that connected to new oil water separator and existing sewer lines at street floor, and removal and replacement of existing floor slab to install the drain pipe from the oil water separator.
SIE staff performed daily surveillance and inspections to verify that the work was completed in accordance with the requirements of the construction contract documents, approved shop drawings, and catalog cuts. SIE also prepared daily inspection reports, ensured that reports were submitted and reviewed in a timely manner, reported and documented any field conditions that deviated from the contract drawings, and made recommendations for corrective action.
