George Washington Bridge Main Span Upper Level Structural Steel Rehabilitation, Stage III

PANYNJ requested that a repairs contract be updated, which included all upper level priority repairs, including priority repairs identified in the 2017 biennial inspection to now reflect all remaining priority repairs through the 2021 QAD Report.

As a subconsultant, SI Engineering, P.C. (SIE) provided a review of the existing contract documents, review of the recent QAD, report, and assigned a repair type from the repair details that had been developed and included in the repair contract for each priority repair in the bridge orthotropic deck that was identified in the 2021 QAD Inspection Report as “new cracks”.

The priority repairs consisted of:

  • Replacing loose / sheared off bolts / rivets connecting stringer bottom flange to seated angle at floor beams
  • Replacing sheared off rivets / bolts at top flange of stringer to secondary floor beam connection
  • Repairing cracked connection angle between main floorbeam and deck truss top chord
  • Repairing cracks in the top flange of stringers S3 and S6 over bearing areas
  • Replacing corroded or sheared off tie down bolts at the bearing of capbeam
  • Repairing corrosion and holes in the web of stringer bearing stool and secondary floorbeams
  • Repairing partially detached stiffening channel at capbeam in the NY anchorage
  • Repairing cracks in the bottom flange of stringers over/ near the bearing areas

SIE was responsible for developing steel repair details for the remaining priority repairs in steel members in the main span upper level. These new drawings with tables for new repairs of cracked rib welds and details for structural steel repairs will be issued in two (2) or three (3) PACC’s. Specific tasks included preparing final contract drawings and engineer’s estimate that will be added to the current contract GWB-244.260 as Post Award Contract Changes (PACC). This required revisions of some existing contract drawings as well as adding new contract drawings in the existing contract documents.
