Initial Tunnel Inspection and Condition Assessment of the Queens-Midtown Tunnel and Hugh L. Carey Tunnel

Initial Tunnel Inspection and Condition Assessment

As a subconsultant, SI Engineering, P.C. (SIE) provided inspection services for the Queens-Midtown Tunnel (QMT), located under the East River connecting Manhattan to Long Island City in New York City, and Hugh L. Carey Tunnel (HLCT), located under the East River and Buttermilk Channel, connecting lower Manhattan to Brooklyn in New York City. The goal of the project was to perform an initial tunnel inspection to establish the physical and functional baseline condition of the tunnels, collect and prepare a complete tunnel inventory database, and report the database and conditions of each tunnel to TBTA, NYSDOT and FHWA. SIE conducted the inspection and was involved in conducting interviews with tunnel facility engineers, thorough field investigations, measurements, recording and coding of data, tunnel elements evaluations, and recommendations for all structural, civil, mechanical, and electrical components of the tunnels. All inspection work was performed as per requirements of the NTIS. Upon completion of the inspection, a detailed inspection report and flag reports with recommendations were submitted to the client.
